Patients with cancer are routinely treated with chemotherapy. Although chemotherapy may be useful in treating cancer, a side effect can be a decrease in the number of red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood. RBCs are cells in your blood, which carry oxygen to different parts of the body. The decrease in the number of RBCs in your body is called anemia. Anemia may cause symptoms such as tiredness, shortness of breath, pale skin, and heart pounding. The current treatment for anemia is transfusions of RBCs or treatment with a drug called epoetin alfa. Epoetin alfa is an approved drug designed to work like the natural protein in your body and has the ability to stimulate RBC production. XXXXX is an investigational drug that has the ability to stimulate RBC production like epoetin alfa. This study will help to determine if giving XXXXX between chemotherapy cycles improves your anemia better than giving the XXXXX at the start of chemotherapy cycles.
